In October 2007 - it was a Sunday, at noon - I asked a few friends to meet me in a small studio on W. 14th Street in Manhattan. I told them I wanted to start a monthly event - where artists and people who believe in the arts could gather. It would be like a church of art - no religion, no dogma - but a ritualized celebration of the power of art and the value of creative expression.
Seven years later, The Secret City is a dynamic and robust community of all kinds of people and the work is transformative. The Secret City formalizes the search for the spiritual in art and creates a fresh model of practice I like to call Art Mindfulness.
We meet quarterly in New York, quarterly in Los Angeles and, as of summer 2014, we expanded into the Hudson Valley, with our first Woodstock service. We've been featured in the New York Times and honored with an Obie Award for service to the creative community.
Our events are raucous, deep, joyful, fun and meditative. Part cabaret, part salon, part ceremony, each event has a unique theme and features live music, visual art, a food offering, cultural calendar, guest performances, storytelling, meditation and songs by our community choir, The Secret City Singers. We follow each service with a coffee hour; some people bring a baked good or something to nosh, we provide the coffee and there's great fellowship. Our events are by suggested donation and we offer free childcare. Our services are on Sunday afternoons.
We are building a network of art worshippers. Please join us.
